Paying for the Label: Leather Pants

December 18, 2008 at 3:43PM by Deanne Hess |

Girl Trying on Leather Pants

Has the world of fashion gone mad?

I'm the first person to rationalize a completely ridiculously priced purchase, especially if that purchase is clothing or shoes. But, The Row (Mary-Kate and Ashley's luxury line) has taken paying for a label to a completely absurd new level.

Leather leggings. Mull that idea over for a second and try to imagine how much leather leggings could possibly cost.

Everyone I know has a legging line: Lindsey Lohan (LNA), American Apparel, Top Shop and what's more is that even premium designers, like Philosophy, La Garconne, and Les Chiffoniers have leather leggings for an already crazy price point of $400-$700. Yes, for leggings. Now, here comes the sticker shocker (apparently) of leggings, the most expensive pair I've ever seen: $1,700! For one pair of leggings.

I had the honor to touch these royalty-like leggings as I was shopping the sales at Bergdorf Goodman's over the weekend. I was walking by a table of jeans and saw a crumpled pile of leather on top of a stack of blue denim. I picked up the leather pants, turned them over and around and thought, "These are really cool!" I definitely had to have them. I started rationalizing spending the likely $350 they were priced at, until my eye caught the price tag. At first I thought, "Wow! What a steal! Only $170!" Then, I looked at the price tag again. Nope, $1,700. All I could do was let out a huge snort-filled laugh (you know, the kind you're really embarrassed happened), I crumpled the leggings, dropped them on the table, and kept on looking.

To Mary-Kate and Ashley: You are not Chanel. However, if you would like to send me a free pair of these leather leggings, I will gladly write about how they are truly awesome.

What's the most money you've spent on one item? How much would you spend on genuine leather leggings?

Deanne

Recession-Proof Your Wardrobe

December 12, 2008 at 2:04PM by Deanne Hess |

Tailor Hemming Up Skirt

The word recession to a shopaholic is an oxymoron — everything is on sale (woo hoo!), but you can't afford to buy anything (boo hoo!). So, what is a girl to do?

First, take advantage of the sales, but be smart about it. Don't buy something just because it's marked down 80 percent. If you aren't completely head-over-heels in love with it and would have pawned your laptop, sold your brother, and scrubbed toilets for a month to buy it at full price, it's not worth purchasing. On the other hand, if it's something you've been eying for sometime and the price is now in your budget, AND it's something you can get a lot of use out of (read: not wear once and then shuffle it to the back of your closet), then it's completely worth getting.

Think about what you wear the most, why you wear it, and how often you wear your favorite things. This will help you visualize not only the styles you prefer, but will help you find items you can wear with those pieces. For instance, if you tend to wear jeans every day, find cute tops and sweaters you can pair with your denim. It doesn't make sense to buy a skirt or a pair of dress pants you'll only wear once.

Another thing to consider is updating what you currently have. I just took a knee-length pleated skirt I haven't worn in years and had it tailored up three inches, so now it's a cute pleated mini I can pair with boots and a sweater. Spend one day going through your closet and trying everything on. Perhaps there are things there that you'd wear if they were slightly different. Take pictures of those pieces, write down what you'd want to change, and then take it all to your local dry cleaners (or whoever does your tailoring). It makes a lot more sense to hem a skirt for $8 than to buy a new one that looks like your old one, but shorter for $50.

My Beef With Brown

December 3, 2008 at 7:00PM by Tricia Carr |

Biker

What color combinations are now ok to try, and a few others that still creep me out.

Ever since I knew what fashion was, I had this crazy pet peeve with the colors black, navy and brown. Never should they appear together in one outfit. All through high school, if I saw someone wearing navy sweatpants with a black shirt, or even a black headband with a brown bag, I would cringe. My friends would laugh at me of course, but it was just one of those things that bothered me.

So you'll never guess who, only a month ago, purchased a pretty, navy top with black lace detailing. I don't know what came over me but, yes, I made that purchase and I'm still happy with it!

This year, I've seen many color combinations I would never have tried a few years ago. I'll admit that a pair of brown boots, like these Madden Girl boots from DSW, look great with a black top. And I love yellow with pretty much any color. I joke that mustard is the new tan. I'm lusting over this Dooney and Bourke bag in Sunflower.

Me adding navy to my closet shows that anyone can change their ways. If you feel like your friends always out-fashion you, try adding one bright piece to transform a boring outfit. Think of the color wheel. Complementary colors (or opposite colors on the wheel), like purple and yellow, stand out next to each other. These color combinations look new because they're rarely done, and it's as easy as an orange shirt with blue jeans. I also like pale colors alongside bold colors. Put a bright, flowy tank over a white or light gray tee to get the look.

I'll always have a beef with brown. When it comes to dark colors, I go for a plum or dark turquoise instead of navy or brown, to go with my plethora of black accessories. But I'm slowly welcoming other new colors like creamy reds and bright blues into my wardrobe.

Have you taken any fashion risks lately? Have you introduced any new colors to your wardrobe this year? Tell us!

What I'm Thankful For

November 26, 2008 at 7:00PM by Tricia Carr |

Closet

Thanksgiving is a great holiday. It's a time to stuff your face with mashed potatoes, play board games with your sister all day, and pay off your credit cards to prepare for the massive amount of gifts you have to buy next month. But it's also a time to be thankful for what we have...in our closet, that is. Thank you designers, fashion editors, stylists, celebs, models and merchandisers for bringing us girls all of the clothes we need to be ourselves.

I'm thankful for long, flowy tops Finally, a style that's flattering on everyone. I throw one on to wear to work and it looks like I've taken more than five minutes to pick out my outfit. And I always add a long necklace to complete the look. A long top is versatile - it goes great with boot cut or skinny jeans and if it's extra long you can throw some leggings on underneath and pretend it's a dress. I like the Embellished Racerback Top from Express or the Drapey Shirred Scoopneck Tee from Victoria's Secret.

I'm thankful for high-waisted pants. I love that I can sit and not worry about my undies showing. Now I shop for pants by the heigh of the zipper - steer clear of any teeny, tiny zippers that are barely the height of your thumb. Instead, I look for jeans that hit right below my bellybutton. My favorite are The Sweetheart Jeans from Old Navy (only $35!).

I'm thankful for flat boots. When I think of myself wearing stiletto boots, I can only imagine tripping on a New York sidewalk and, instead of only my heel getting stuck and my shoe sliding off, my whole foot gets twisted and soon I face plant on the ground. To avoid this situation, I stick to flat boots. Slouchy styles, like the Penny Loves Kenny Fizz Suede Boots from DSW, are everywhere. I'm asking for boots with a lace-up detail like the White Mountain Feather Suede Boots, also from DSW. Check out these winter boots for some comfy flats (and a few pairs I'm afraid of).

I'm thankful for hair pins. When it's humid, or my hair is just not cooperating, I love that I can stick a pretty bobby pin in my hair and call it a hairstyle. I like classic metal bobby pins - you can get about 100 for $5 at most pharmacies. And I love Betsey Johnson's hair pins especially her Tulip Rhinestone Barrett. I wear hair pins on one side to pull the hair back from my face, with a low ponytail to keep hairs in place, or to secure a short braid.

I'm thankful for cute clutches. Over the summer I accumulated a huge collection of clutches...and I'm still shopping for more. I grab a new one every time I leave the house. I bought a bright turquoise one this fall that I wear with any black or gray top and I've gotten a bunch of compliments on it. Recently at the Miss Sixty sample sale I got a really unique, black clutch that was originally $159 for $20! All you really need is your cell phone, some cash and lip gloss, right?

'Tis the Season to Layer

November 25, 2008 at 4:00PM by Tricia Carr |

Layering

Be practical and stylish this winter by layering from head to toe.

Winter weather can get annoying. One second you're outside shivering, the next you're inside sweating. In order to survive the winter weather, you must master the art of layering. Not only will you stay warm, but it's also a great way to show off your unique sense of style. Make the most of what you have in your closet by layering different pieces each day. You might end up with a killer outfit that you didn't even realize you had!

Scarves
Everyone wears scarves in the winter. Heavy scarves are great to layer over a coat – we love the extra long ones! But what about that cute, light scarf you wore all spring and summer and just don't want to let go, even if the temp is below freezing. Guess what? You can wear them both! Twist the heavy and light scarf together to wear outside and change into just the light one once you're indoors. Tuck your heavy scarf away with your winter jacket. Lighter scarves are great to put over an outfit. Wrap two summer scarves together to make them warmer and funkier.

Summer Tops
It's a little too chilly to wear your summer tanks, but there are tons of new ways to layer them! Try one under a cardigan, under a deep V-neck top, or over a girly blouse. You can easily transform your favorite summer shirt by putting it over a tee or try a tube top underneath in a contrasting color. Add a blazer to any of these layering combinations for an important meeting and un-layer for lunch with friends. This applies to sundresses, too.

This winter trend is all about new patterns. Try one under a solid layer – picture a leopard print top under a red sweater. It's all about light layers on top to avoid looking like you're traveling to Antarctica.

Keep Those Legs Warm
Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean you can't show some leg – invest in a good pair of tights. They can be layered under any skirt, dress or even a pair of shorts. From opaque to patterned, tights are in. This season's floral tights are adorable and look great paired with a solid tunic or dress for a splash of fun. Intricate lace tights are a great way to add some edge to a black dress or skirt.

Also, grab a pair of leg warmers and throw them on with any skirt or dress on those really cold days. And don't forget leggings. Wear them under a dress or extra-long top with knee-high boots.

Let Your Slip Show
Get ready for this ladies; it's now acceptable to flaunt your undergarments. But we're not talking about your grandma's white slip. Your Slip is Showing specializes in slips meant to peek out from under your skirt. They're sheer on top, but have chic lace designs on the bottom that will update your look while adding an extra layer of warmth.

Whatever Happened to the 32A?!?

November 21, 2008 at 3:00PM by Amanda Pickens |

Padded Bra

Where to find A-cup bras!

Lacking in the cleavage department, I often feel forgotten when visiting Victoria's Secret. I guess it just isn't cost effective for the large chain to cater to those of us who fail to fill a B-cup. Perhaps they've begun carrying more A's in the past couple years, but I wouldn't know since I gave up long ago after repeatedly being told, "No, I'm sorry, that doesn't come in a 32A... try the Pink line." While I respect Victoria Secret's decision to create a younger, less sex-obsessed line, I don't appreciate their assumption that all small-breasted girls and women would rather buy cotton bras from the Pink Collection than the lacy lingerie sold throughout the rest of the store. What can I say? I love lace!

After getting ready to give up on the bra hunt for good, I happened to stumble upon an underwear sale at GapBody. Quickly assuming they would be just like VS, I was pleasantly surprised to see A-cups in almost every style...finally, there's a place to buy 32A's in sexy laces and sultry hues. There's actually a place for me to find bras that don't remind me of middle school! Check out their cute bras and undies online if there isn't a store near you!

Love,
Amanda

Secret Santa

November 20, 2008 at 11:00AM by Tricia Carr |

Hayden Panettiere and Santa

Don't worry Hayden. I'm sure you're on his good list!

When I hear those two words - Secret Santa - anxiety hits. What if I get someone I don't know? How much money do I spend? What if they think my gift is lame?

When my sorority decided to do a Secret Santa, I closed my eyes and dove my hand into the bag of names. Lucky, I picked a girl I know pretty well. But when I started thinking about the perfect gift, I realized I still had no idea what to get her. With my $15 spending limit in mind, I hit the Web to find some options.

Lulu's is one of my favorite sites for inexpensive accessories. First, the Robin Tote, $37, caught my eye, but it's way over my spending limit. Have a friend who loves music, but you're not sure what CD she wants? This Stereo Wallet by Loungefly, $16, is an adorable accessory she'll actually use! You hate getting the generic hat, scarf and gloves set and your Secret Santa probably does, too. This year give legwarmers! Lulu's Cheeky Me Leg Warmers, $8, come in classic colors that she can try over her pumps.

Next I stopped by Target.com. Their jewelry is great for gifts. I liked the Xhilaration Cuff Bracelet, $11, the Merona Hearts and Horseshoes Dangle Earrings, $8 and the Xhilaration Coin Necklace, $13. I'm a sucker for cute slippers. I'm considering these penguin slippers for my Secret Santa - they'll definitely get her into the holiday spirit.

I pass Pylones in Grand Central every day and I never have time to look. Spring break is coming up, and your Secret Santa might appreciate a unique luggage tag and passport cover. The Hefyglass Carré perles rings would make a really cool gift and they're adjustable so size doesn't matter.

I got distracted from my Secret Santa gift for a second to search for some Twilight goodies. I found a goldmine at Hot Topic. Are you team Edward or team Jacob?

I know gift cards are so impersonal, but I think you’re covered if you put it in a cute ID case - it shows you put some effort into the gift. I like Charlotte Russe’s Floral Corduroy ID Case. Anything filled with chocolate or baked goods is a hit, and candy is another inexpensive way to complete a gift. This mug is awesome! Just fill with Hershey’s Chocolate Truffle Kisses or M&M’s Premiums.

You don’t have to buy your friends crazy, expensive gifts. Giving something small that makes your Secret Santa laugh or taking the time to bake her favorite cookies is a perfect way to show her you consider her a good friend.

What is my Secret Santa getting? I’m going to decorate a glass that will imply our inside joke and get a cookbook with a bookmark on the recipe for eggnog. She loves to cook, so I think she’ll appreciate it. Plus, I love arts and crafts! What are you getting your Secret Santa?

The Twilight Prom: How to Dress Like Bella

November 17, 2008 at 1:15PM by Tammy Tibbetts |

The Twilight premiere is in T minus 4 days! Like you, I'm beyond excited, mainly for one particular scene — the prom!! I'm a tad obsessed with it because of my job as editor of MyPromStyle.com, but I know this scene will melt your hearts too. So, in honor of Twilight's smashing uh-mazing prom, I've picked out a few prom dresses that you could wear to mimic Bella Swan's simple, stunning look: she wears a sapphire, V-neck, knee-length, tiered-skirted gown. (I grabbed a screenshot from a YouTube video) You'll want to ditch Bella's leg brace and camel-colored cover-up, of course. I would have chosen something silver and shimmery if I was feeling chilly in Forks, Washington on prom night, but whatev — Edward loves Bella in spite of a small fashion faux pas.

If you're going for a splurge, you might like the flirty tiered dress by Mikael Aghal, $498 on edressme.com (#1). But if you're like Bella, who works hard for the money at Newton's sports shop, then you might want to try the steals from David's Bridal (#2 and #3).

1. Mikael Aghal dress

2. David's Bridal, style 018911, $149

3. David's Bridal, style 98602305, $99

p.s. Our friend Dan Koday at Seventeen.com actually visited Twilight's prom set during filming! Watch his video here:

Shop With Your Grandma...And Like It

November 12, 2008 at 7:00PM by Tricia Carr |

Mean Mom

I was out with my friend the other day and I complimented her sweater. She laughed and said I would never guess where it was from. I don’t do the guessing game very well, so I said Target? No. Forever 21? No. She got frustrated with my coolness, so she told me – Coldwater Creek. What! Her mom works there, so she got this adorable sweater, made for someone twice her age, for a great price. This inspired me to do some old lady shopping of my own.

I always pass the Ann Taylor windows and sneak a look. On their Website, I found this adorable silk tank. It’s a great basic to wear under a black blazer or by itself with a skirt for a holiday party. Ann Taylor is a good place to shop for skirts. They’re all in classic shapes that you’ll wear forever. I love the Newberry Tweed Skirt. Need a little sparkle in your life? Strut your stuff in the Tulle Paillette Pleated Skirt, and embrace your sexy grandma look!

You don’t have to run to the juniors section every time you enter a department store. I’ve found some of my favorite pieces in misses! Macy’s INC brand is one of my favorites. They have designer looks for much less, like the Short-Sleeved Cable-Knit Sweater Dress. I'm putting their Belted Puffer Jacket on my winter wish list! Don't forget to check the sale racks in the designer sections for great deals.

So next time your mom wants to take you to her favorite store, quit complaining and go along with her. Maybe you’ll find something you love. Or dress your mom up in an outrageous kindergarten teacher sweater – just don’t let her buy it!

Has your mom or grandma ever bought you something you actually wear? Tell us!

Happy Shopping,

Faux Real?

November 7, 2008 at 6:00PM by Deanne Hess |

Brown and Tan Faux Fur Vest

It was a dreary, rainy morning and I was running late for an appointment. I had forgotten my rainboots back at the office and each step I took brought me closer to committing suede-pump suicide. The rain started to fall harder and faster, and like any New Yorker, I took cover under an awning waiting for it to let up.

As I shook my umbrella dry, I noticed the mannequins in the window of the store front I was using for protection: great tights, fabulous printed skirts and dresses and of course the decision clincher, flannel shirts. I walked in, took a deep breath and made my way over to a rack. I suddenly found myself upon a row of faux-fur vests. Rachel Zoe would have been proud, well if they had been real fur, but nonetheless, they were cute and in my price range. My morning was suddenly looking a whole lot brighter.

If you're looking to complete your outfit with faux fur, check your local vintage shop or Goodwill store. Many times You can find great jackets or vest at very reasonable prices. And, the next time you're in New York, you should definitely hit up LF Soho for really great finds like dresses, shoes, shirts and jackets you won't find anywhere else.

xoxo,
Deanne

P.S. Not sure how to wear faux fur? Since it's an over-the-top piece, pair it with skinnies, boots and a long-sleeve tee for a cute but comfy cold weather outfit. Or, go completely boho and add it on top of a great floral print dress, tights and boots.

Headbands and Heels

November 7, 2008 at 5:00PM by Tricia Carr |

Sex in the City Wedding

From your head to your toes, we've got you covered!

I can't stop shopping for feather headbands! I've been eyeing them since I saw Carrie Bradshaw wearing that feather...or was it a bird...in her hair on her wedding day in the Sex in the City movie. I love the look, but trying an SJP trend is risky.

On my search, I found a few pricy but fabulous feather hair accessories. I'm in love with the Feather Fluff Headband from Intermix and the Christine Headband from Pluma. Barney's has an awesome extra wide feather headband by Jennifer Ouellette.

There are affordable feather accessories in stores for girls on a budget. Urban Oufitters'
