On Top of the World

November 18, 2008 at 8:00PM by Lauren Bruins |

Magnifying Glass I love to keep up with the latest fashion trends and celebrity gossip whether it be through browsing magazines or Websites. But I also think it's important to stay informed about what's going on in the world. There are so many issues around the world that we won't even know about if we don't take the time to investigate.

It's really easy to get stuck watching the same TV shows and only going to your favorite Websites and never tune in to what's really going on. Although it may seem boring to watch the news or read a newspaper, knowing about things that are happening is actually really interesting. It becomes even more important as you get older and begin to find your place in the world.

I don't know about you, but I want to be aware of things that are happening. Staying informed is not hard at all. In between visits to Perez, take a few minutes to browse though the nytimes.com or cnn.com and take a look at the headlines for both national and international news. You may even find yourself wanting to get involved somehow or discover an interest in something that you never knew about.

Do you think it's important to know what's going on in the world?

xoxo,

Lauren

Farewell New York

November 18, 2008 at 8:00PM by Holleh Nowrouz |

Cosmogirl interns

As this is my last week at CosmoGirl, I find it only fitting to write a farewell blog. I thought after three months of living in New York, I'd be screaming to get back to the motherland that is England. Oh how miscalculated my thoughts were. Granted, when I'm back home I get to see my closest friends, gossip with my sister, eat my bodyweight in prawn cocktail crisps and drive my car anywhere and everywhere, but there's a lot I'm going to be leaving behind. So I guess this blog is dedicated to the people that made this experience what it was – the most amazing fragment of my life.

Stacey Nathan (CG intern) — also known to me as Daria. Thanks to you, I don't have to spend my first Thanksgiving on my own with a microwaved meal. Thanks to you, I always had someone to hang out with, laugh with and be sarcastic with. Thanks to your dry sense of humor and cynic nature, I always felt at home around you. You hold my New York memories of laughter.

Vanessa Friedman (CG intern) — Thanks to you, I was never short of boy troubles. How someone as funny, genuine and self-assured as you has boy troubles still astounds me! Thanks to you, I was able to experience life in a university dorm, however brief that experience may have been! Meeting someone who possessed the same openness and honesty about life, sex and relationships made you my New York rock.

Laura Dellavilla (CG intern) — Thanks to your semester in London, we were able to talk of all the things we miss about England, especially the cute boys. Thanks to you, there was someone in the office that could understand and translate my British phrases. You were my little piece of England in New York.

Ryan Holman — also known as 'The Waiter' to the CosmoGirl interns. There is only one thing to say to you; you were my New York best friend.

So in lieu of this blog, I guess all that's left to say is "cheers guys." The memories you've all created are traveling with me across the pond.

Farewell New York — it's been wicked!

Cheers,
Holleh

Daily Gossip Roundup

November 18, 2008 at 5:00PM by Megan Cahn |

Britney Spears Wins at VMA's

A Britney Spears documentary is set to air at the end of the month and what has been revealed so far is pretty juicy — and sad. Celebitchy tells us that Britney tearfully admits that she feels like a prisoner trapped in her life, like everyday is “groundhog” day. That is a brave statement to tell the world, but I still wonder why someone that feels trapped by the media would broadcast her feelings through the media. What do you guys think? P.S. She also admits that she married Kevin for all the wrong reasons. Surprise!

Are all celebrities friends? Well, Celebitchy also tells us that star couples Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer were hanging out with Nicole Richie and Joel Madden. That just seems so random and weird to me. But I also think John and Jen and Nicole and Joel seem random and weird as couples. I don’t mean to be a hater — just as long as they’re all happy, right?

And finally, happy two year anniversary to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. In celeb years that’s like 30, right? I mean who would have thought two people that met in an audition for the role of Mrs. Tom Cruise would actually work out. He must have a really good casting agent. Long live Tomkat!

Xoxo,
Megan

Five Questions with Shontelle

November 18, 2008 at 12:00AM by Mike McLafferty |

Singer Shontelle visiting the CosmoGirl office

Every year we have our share of breakout music artists that hit the scene and totally explode with their fresh new music. And now you can go ahead and add Shontelle to that list for 2008! The Barbados native is fresh on the scene and taking radio by storm with her debut single "T-Shirt" (if you've had your radio on any Top 40 station at all within the last month you've had to hear it). So sit back, relax, and get to know Shontelle.

YOUR DEBUT ALBUM IS CALLED SHONTELLIGENCE, WHY DON'T YOU GO AHEAD AND TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT IT?

Well the album comes out on November 18th and the very first single is "T-Shirt" which I'm very happy to say is doing really, really well right now! I got the opportunity to work with a lot of great producers on the album like Wayne Wilkins who did "Bleeding Love" for Leona Lewis as well as Stargate and SRP who do a lot of music with Rihanna and other artists so it's been a really great experience so far.

THE LEAD SINGLE "T-SHIRT" IS DEFINITELY STARTING TO TAKE OFF AND DO REALLY WELL. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO GET SUCH A COOL RECEPTION ON YOUR FIRST SINGLE?

I still have to pinch myself sometimes because it's very surreal! It feels like just yesterday I was a regular girl in Barbados going to school and trying to be a lawyer and then this! And I was warned about every artists nightmare like there was going to be things that may not go exactly as I want and be prepared in case that happens, and I was prepared but luckily so far I haven't had to live any of those nightmares...so far so good!

AS A SONGWRITER A LOT OF YOUR SONGS TEND TO HAVE A VERY EMPOWERING MESSAGE IN THE LYRICS. IS THAT SOMETHING YOU AIM FOR AS A SONGWRITER?

My personality is very fun-loving, and I love being a goof-ball and being silly, but I'm also very conscious of what's going on around me and things that are happening in the world. I realize that a lot of people are thinking the same thing, but everyone doesn't have the voice to say it and put it out there. To me it's really important to put music out there that brings awareness to certain issue that may be going on and it's also my way to get things out there that's on my mind and share it with everyone else because I know there are others that feel the same way.

YOU ACTUALLY KNEW RIHANNA BEFORE SHE REALLY EXPLODED AS AN ARTIST ON THE SCENE. HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL TO SEE HOW HUGE SHE'S BECOME?

I feel like a proud big sister! I remember the first time I met her I had no idea she was into music like that, I didn't even know she wanted to be a singer. She always had really striking features so I really thought she was going to grow up and be a model or something, and then one day I was listening to the radio and it's "Pon de Replay"! I'm really, really proud of her though!

WHAT DOES SHONTELLE DO IN HER FREE TIME?

If I was back in Barbados, I'd be on the beach! I love to body-board and I have a lot of friends that surf and we just hang out on the beach! I love to watch movies, so now that I'm in New York I watch a lot of movies! I rent and buy tons of DVD's and watch those or a group of us will go to a theater and catch a movie. But other than that it's just me trying to find time to catch up with my family and friends so I'm addicted to Facebook...it's a problem!

Hair 9-1-1!

November 17, 2008 at 11:00PM by Lauren Tyler |

Lauren and Christian pre haircut

So Stacey did the deed, now it’s my turn…to be a Fekkai hair model. This Thursday, 10 am is D-Day. I am both eagerly and nervously anticipating the day that I part ways with my locks. I was a Fekkai model about a month ago, and it was a great experience. I mean what can be better than a free hair appointment? Last time, I wasn't so brave and I only got a blowout. It looked great, but I'm ready to be more daring...

So that's where all of you come in. I have no idea what to do to my hair! It's like hair 9-1-1. I kind of want to do something totally unexpected. People say that cutting your hair is cathartic. I'm not so sure if I believe that, but I know I'm sick of my hair's current state of affairs. It's time for a change! And I'm thinking it might be time to carpe diem. I mean, you only live once right? The beauty of hair? It grows! So maybe it's time I try that asymmetrical bob or something really edgy a la Posh or Katie Holmes.

Should I go short or stay long? My hair is naturally curly. It curls into ringlets that people like to play with all day long. But I like to keep it straight, and if I go short, I will definitely need to keep it straight, because who knows what it'll look like when it shrinks into curls!

I need your help! I want a cut that will make me look fierce. Do you guys have any ideas? I'm open to all kinds of suggestions!

Peace Out,

Lauren

Total Finale Live

November 17, 2008 at 5:30PM by Tricia Carr |

Beyonce

Once my friend and I left school early, hopped on a train to New York with a homemade sign that said "Yellowcard, sing happy birthday to my friend," and found our way to MTV Studios in Times Square. We were convinced the band would see our sign, invite us up to TRL, serenade my friend to a rock version of "Happy Birthday" and sign our T-shirts. What actually happened was a little different. We stood in the rowdy crowd waving our sign like idiots and getting hit in the head with the hands of other waving fans. Those were the days.

Most have been critical of MTV’s TRL in recent years. Where did all the music videos go? I admit I haven’t tuned in to the show in a while, but I couldn’t miss TFLTotal Finale Live – last night. Yes, for those of you who haven’t heard, TRL is over after its 10 year run. Here’s some of my favorite moments from the three hour finale.

Beyonce opened the show with a high-energy performance. During "If I Were A Boy" Beyonce proved why she’s still a star after Destiny’s Child – her voice sounded amazing live! Next she performed "Single Ladies" complete with the dance moves from the video. (Watch it below!)

It was best said by MTV News correspondent John Norris - "The Backstreet Boys outlived TRL." It was only appropriate that they performed their song from the number three video on TFL, "I Want It That Way." It’s weird that I never had a crush on a Backstreet Boy. I was more of an NSYNC girl. But I must say they are looking good! Oh, and their voices weren't so bad either.

As a Fall Out Boy fan, I am biased, but I thought their performance was awesome. I’ve seen some not-so-good live performances from the band, but on a stage on the sidewalk outside MTV, they rocked out to "I Don't Care" and "Dance, Dance." And band hottie Pete Wentz wasn’t even there. He was home with pregnant wife Ashlee Simpson. When Carson Daly spoke to Pete on the phone, he said he just bought a bootleg copy of the Twilight movie and had been watching it all day. Jealous?

Retired MTV VJ Hilarie Burton was back! I think she’s one of the best VJs the show ever had (next to Carson and La La). It was cool to see her partying where her career started, and not as the dramatic Peyton on One Tree Hill. She got her start after winning a TRL contest to interview stars on the red carpet. They liked her so much they kept her! Go Hilarie!

Travis Barker spoke to TRL fans on the huge screen in Times Square. During the awkward interview, he didn’t say much about the plane crash, but he looked healthy and seemed really happy to be talking to his fans. Blink 182’s “What’s My Age Again” was TFL’s number nine video. It features the band running the streets...naked. Remember that?

First a video montage, then the number one TFL video, then The Britney Collection. TRL was Britney Spears' home away from home during her "...Baby One More Time" album success and it was only appropriate that her first hit was the last video played on TRL. She didn’t make an appearance or phone in, but Britney was there in spirit. After the show, The Britney Collection special showed fans' favorite Britney videos and a trailer from her documentary For the Record, which will air on MTV on Nov. 30 at 10 p.m., two days before the release date of Circus.

Sunday was a great day for MTV. What was your favorite TFL moment? Will the show be missed? Tell us.

Less Hills, more music,

The Twilight Prom: How to Dress Like Bella

November 17, 2008 at 1:15PM by Tammy Tibbetts |

The Twilight premiere is in T minus 4 days! Like you, I'm beyond excited, mainly for one particular scene--the prom!! I'm a tad obsessed with it because of my job as editor of MyPromStyle.com, but I know this scene will melt your hearts too. So, in honor of Twilight's smashing uh-mazing prom, I've picked out a few prom dresses that you could wear to mimic Bella Swan's simple, stunning look: she wears a sapphire, V-neck, knee-length, tiered-skirted gown. (I grabbed a screenshot from a YouTube video) You'll want to ditch Bella's leg brace and camel-colored cover-up, of course. I would have chosen something silver and shimmery if I was feeling chilly in Forks, Washington on prom night, but whatev — Edward loves Bella in spite of a small fashion faux pas.

If you're going for a splurge, you might like the flirty tiered dress by Mikael Aghal, $498 on edressme.com (#1). But if you're like Bella, who works hard for the money at Newton's sports shop, then you might want to try the steals from David's Bridal (#2 and #3).

1. Mikael Aghal dress

2. David's Bridal, style 018911, $149

3. David's Bridal, style 98602305, $99

p.s. Our friend Dan Koday at Seventeen.com actually visited Twilight's prom set during filming! Watch his video here:

A Haircut Adventure: 2

November 16, 2008 at 1:00PM by Stacey Nathan |

After The Hair Model Experience

Last week, I blogged about planning on getting my hair cut. I actually went to get my hair cut this week as a Frederic Fekkai model. So I wanted to fill you all in on how it went.

I was so nervous, sitting there with a bunch of other girls in the waiting room. One by one, stylists came downstairs and picked out a girl, or asked us what kind of hairstyle we wanted. And slowly girls left with the stylists.

I got even more tense as the time went by and I didn't get picked. It seemed like no one wanted to work with my curly hair (everyone else had straight hair). But I knew that they would do a good job because everyone I saw who had already been styled looked fantastic.

When I finally got paired with my stylist, Vivian, I was excited because she had curly hair, too. She looked at my hair for a while and came up with an idea about what she wanted to do with it.

Then she called over one of the head stylists and discussed her ideas and strategies (in French) about it. Of course, they asked me how I felt about it, too. But I said that I trusted whatever they wanted to do. And I think it turned out great!

I didn't end up with bangs, like so many of you suggested. I ended up with a lot more layers and Vivian took off a lot of length. I feel like my hair is lighter and looks more sophisticated. Overall it was a great experience.

So, what do you guys think? Would any of you be a hair model?

Love,
Stacey

Kiss and Tell or Ditched and Tell?

November 16, 2008 at 12:00AM by Caitlin Kelly |

Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas

One of my friends recently broke up with her boyfriend only to discover the grisly details of their breakup plastered all over Facebook a few days later. Upon changing his relationship status, his friends wrote on his wall asking what happened and why he was now listed as single. Instead of keeping the information about his relationship private, or even telling his friends in person or on the phone, the boy decided to respond on his friends' walls telling them everything about their messy breakup — for everyone to see. The next time my friend signed on, she was greeted with a mini-feed detailing some very personal information. Not only was she really hurt by his actions, but the way he reacted to their separation made her doubt that she would be able to remain friends with him in the future.

This habit of kissing and telling, or rather getting ditched and telling seems to be more common due to all the celebrities who share their breakup stories in magazines and on TV shows. Example: When John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston broke up, John decided to tell the paparazzi all about it. Most recently, Taylor Swift appeared on Ellen and talked about her breakup with Joe Jonas saying, "I'm not even going to remember the guy who broke up with me on the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18." The fact that she was dumped over the phone is totally uncool, but telling millions of viewers about it isn't so hot either.

Celebs are a big influence in some people's lives and seeing them air their dirty laundry to the world almost makes it seem okay for us to do the same even if we aren't in gossip magazines. After getting dumped, I think people's first reaction is to tell everyone how awful their ex was as a way to make themselves feel better. But, in the end it only reflects poorly on the person who is blabbing personal details to everyone they know.

What do you think about people who broadcast all the details of their bad breakups? Do you think that celebs are setting a bad example and making it okay for us to get ditched and tell?

xo

Match Made in Heaven

Paramore Superlatives

If you're a Twilight fan, chances are you've heard the new Paramore song, "Decode."

But, in the slight chance that you are not one of the many who have bought the Twilight Soundtrack or heard the Paramore song all over the radio, let me just tell you — you're missing out.

I've loved Paramore since I heard their song "Misery Business" last summer, and I've loved the Twilight series since I read it in a record amount of time this summer. So, when it was announced that Paramore would be recording two songs for the soundtrack, I was thrilled.

Now that the final result has been released, I can't stop listening to it! Paramore was a perfect choice — the lyrics go right along with the plot, and Hayley's voice seems to tell the story from Bella's point of view, just like the book does (which is great, because I can't imagine Bella herself being much of a singer).

My hope is that Paramore has a part in the soundtrack to Breaking Dawn, as well as any subsequent sequels.

What do you think of Paramore's new song? Have you bought your Twilight movie tickets yet?

Until next time,

Kaitlyn

P.S. - Be sure to watch the video, and check out Hayley's gorgeous red hair as well as some clips from the movie! Enjoy!

Operation Deactivate Facebook: Failed

November 15, 2008 at 7:00AM by Vanessa Friedman |

Girl Blowing A Kiss At A Laptop

So as you might remember from last week, I deactivated my Facebook. I felt like there was too much information about me online, and I didn't like how much time I spent browsing (stalking) other people's pages.

Well girls, as many of you may have predicted, I did not last very long. In fact, I lasted a very pathetic 8 days. It was like Chanukah but with no presents and no miracle. Uh…kind of.

Okay, I guess there was a miracle of some sort: I now have proof that it is possible to go a whole week without a Facebook. And I guess I pr
